Richard Widmer

Richard Widmer (USA) is a documentary filmmaker and artist whose broad-ranging experience includes photography, sculpture, history, architecture, poetry, native American culture, wilderness expeditions, Chinese language and culture, broadcast television, contemporary art and art education. Widmer’s art and films explore artistic practice and purpose, and express a lifelong interest in cross-cultural narratives.

Widmer's most recent work includes the newly formed Millers Falls Arts Bridge (MFAB), an experiment in art and social practice that aims to connect the creative energy of artists in China with the nature, history and culture of New England, through the renovation of an abandoned church in the village of Millers Falls and engagement with the local community.

 

Widmer’s work has screened in the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), the Museum of Roman Civilization, the Palace of Justice in Brussels, the College of London, the National Museum of China, the Central Academy of Fine Arts Museum, the Beijing Today Art Museum, OCAT-Shenzhen, Nanjing Academy of Art Museum, the National Museum of Singapore, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.

 

Collaborating intimately within the Chinese art community, Widmer has filmed many of China's strongest artists, including Xu Bing, Cai Guo-qiang, Zhan Wang, Yang Jiechang, Zhang Peili, Cui Xiuwen, Qiu Zhijie, Jia Aili, Fang Lijun, Li Shan, Wang Guangyi, Zhang Xiaogang, Peili and Tang Yuhan.
